So far so good on the “shopping from home” and eating out of the store cupboard to save up as much as I can over the six weeks of summer.
The one thing I don’t have in my store cupboard is a stash of booze ….. and I have been invited to a “bring a bottle barbecue” on Friday night. Hostess has asked if I will make a double batch of my home-made mayonnaise to bring along, but I feel a bit of a meany not being able to lay my hands on a “bottle”.
Store cupboard to the rescue ………. make my own alcoholic ginger beer. Its cheap, can be made from what I have on hand and will be mildly alcoholic and slightly fizzy in just 48 hours.
So made today and drink it Friday – its a plan!!! Figure if nothing else it will be a conversation starter on Friday evening.
MILDLY ALCOHOLIC GINGER BEER – honest LOL
- 225g sugar
- 2 tbsp grated fresh ginger
- Juice of one lemon
- 1 tbsp honey
- quarter teaspoon of yeast – baking yeast will do.
First – grab yourself a 2 litre fizzy drinks bottle and clean it thoroughly. Then clean it some more with a sterilising tablet or a dribble of bleach and rinse so that no residue of your cleaning remains. You don’t want a brew that tastes of bleach ……. really you don’t
DON’T use a glass bottle – this brew throws off serious amounts of gas and you don’t want explosions anywhere. A plastic bottle will go hard and bulge outwards before bursting so you will have plenty of warning to let out some of the gas.
It looks a bit murky – but trust me its fine.
Now sit the bottle somewhere warm for 48 hours – checking occasionally to see if the bottle has gone hard.
If it does simply unscrew the bottle and let out the gas before screwing the lid back on again. Hearing the “hiss” is very satisfying!!
After 48 hours place the bottle in a fridge to thoroughly chill which will inhibit the yeast and stop it fermenting any more…… and take along to your party.
Now – jury is out whether to strain or not – personally I don’t mind little bits of hot ginger in my glass, but you can strain the mix through a tea strainer onto a glass of ice is you prefer ………………….. and it is brilliant with a slice of lime too.
Totally fabulous – and totally free as I made it from stuff in my stores.
Roll on Friday!!!
So who fancies making some homemade hooch for the weekend then?
