Saturdays – love Saturdays!!!
The boys are at home and we usually organise a “Film Night” by watching a DVD on the telly (which I had to wipe over before we switched it on ….. not cos I am a complete slattern but we have been out and about all week and as the TV hardly gets used these days the dust through the open windows descends and sits)
Saturday night is also “Curry Night” … just getting my boys in training for when they are on a “lads night out” of course
Homemade of course with a base of Curry in A Hurry curry paste to keep the spendies down – even an icky curry sauce in a jar is slipping out of our price range these days.
Today was new potato and chick pea curry – with raitha …………… and naan bread. Balti style – where you use the nann to scoop up the curry and eat with relish.
The great news is that Nann Bread is cheap as anything to make – and like the 30 minute Rolls last week can be rustled up from scratch in just half an hour. When you eat them they are soft and fluffy and steam ever so slightly – so much nicer than a lukewarm carry-out bread.
So first whack your oven on at the highest it can go – you want it to be fierce so be brave. My oven has numbers up to 240 and although I am dubious about the actual top temperature I “Dial it up to eleven” as Spinal Tap would say.
Place your baking tray in there whilst you are at it – this needs to be scorching hot too so that the naan breads are cooked superquick from the top and the bottom.
30 Minute Naan Recipe
In a jug or separate bowl mix
- 100 ml warm water
- 60 ml natural yoghurt or milk
- 2 tsp sugar
- 2 tsp yeast
and set aside for ten minutes to get frothy.
In a large bowl measure out:
- 280g Strong Bread Flour
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1 tsp salt
After the ten minutes add the yeast mixture plus one tablespoon of veg oil into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough is formed. Knead for a couple of minutes until smooth.Cut the dough into four and roll out into ………….. well into Nann Brad shapes! you know what they look like don’t you?Like big pitta breads. At the 15 minute mark now. Let them rest for 10 minutes …..
Before slapping onto the scorching hot baking tray and baking for about four minutes until puffed and golden around the edges. Slice them up and serve with your curry or balti and some raitha for dipping in.
Superquick and supercheap ……. just what is needed when we are off and chasing our next 1% target. You might notice a big jump today – lodgers have paid their rent so there is always a quick cash injection at the beginning of the month.
Now the fun and games begin as we look for ways to gather the rest together. Eeep!
There may be a lot of Frugal Cooking in our month to come I think!! Still nothing new under the sun there is there?
I have a busy week ahead …….. Tuesday my boy becomes a man (he will be fourteen …… don’t ask me where the time went!!) and we are off to spend the day at the Edinburgh Festival like we did last year. Train tickets booked – well a ticket booked for me as “Kids go Free” here during the holidays.
Three sets of show tickets have been purchased – I know, THREE!!! But in my defence it is “Buy One Get One Free” Tuesday so the money I have saved since last year has gone a lot further this year.
Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland – Kids Puppets Show
I need a Doctor – The Whosical!! – Dr Who Musical
Circa, Beyond – a circus spectacle at the Udderbelly
So bleeding organised I am scaring myself!!! Even a fistful of ice-creams under budget!!!
Then on Wednesday I am back to Edinburgh to an event with our First Minister!!! OMG!!! And to top it I have been offered £100 for the Maryhill Foodbank if I get him to pose with me for a selfie!! So …………
One – I am going to have to find a way of arranging this in advance and
Two – I hope he knows how to do the whole selfie thing cos I have never taken one in my life
Come to think of it – get me and all my first world problems LOL.
So what does the week ahead hold for you all my lovelies?? What frugal coping strategies have you got in place to ramp up the fun without emptying out your pockets?
