I know …………….. erm!! I’m in China!!!
It was all a bit last minute – with Chinese Visas being collected on Saturday and my Itinerary arriving shortly afterwards. The proposed Monday travel day actually turned out to be a Sunday travel day (good spot there Victoria) and I was literally packed in twenty minutes on Saturday night and in Edinburgh Airport by 9am the next morning having abandoned my kids at my Mum’s en route!! Note to self – must find Mum a cracking present when I have a moment to draw breath!
I’m here as an Arbiter for the World Memory Championship – with 160 odd contestants from all around the world converging on Haikou over the next day or two to compete in ten memory disciplines and win Grand Master Status – or even scoop the World Championship ranking.
Basically – all my Mind Mapping, Memory, Stage Managent and Press skills rolled into one and resulting in a Freebie trip to China!!! I know!! Pinch me!!! I am in a place I have always wanted to visit and it hasn’t cost me a bean to get here.
Merry Christmas Me!!!!
Of course I am not here to play tourist …. it will be long days and miles of tedious marking and collating .. but still!! China!!! YAY!!!
So its currently (looks at watch) about quarter to seven in the UK … and its quarter to three in the afternoon here … and the jet lag is beginnning to bite real time. This is what I can see from my desk. Bit misty innit?
After a long haul and lots of longer transfer times we got here about 1am – but thanks to the wonder of a a very loud alarm clock and a bag full of makeup I made our breakfast briefing with a smile on my face.
Followed by a cat nap ………………… Door was rattled again at 12.15pm and by 12.30 I was sitting down to my very first “eaten in China Chinese Lunch” with the sponsors. OMG! There are definintley some recipes I am going to have to track down – favourite at lunch today was aubergines in rice wine and chilli ……. I could have had a bath in that bowl it was so gorgeous!!!
Now I am inthe process of sorting out the competition papers for the event – lots of collating and checking and matching …. accuracy and jet-lag really don’t blend well do they?? Haikou is on the sea ………….. its early summer here and pretty humid … but the blue sky was twinkling in the background ……….and there are kids down in that park flying proper Koi Carp kites. Its all lovely and green around the hotel – which is lovely to look at whilst we are working. We think we have a day free on the 14th – so some closer investigation can be done then. So my “home away from home” this week. I call this the “MFin3 on Tour” look LOL. My trusty laptop, a proxy server (there are banned sites you can’t access from China – like Twitter and Facebook but it appears that I can reach my email and the back end of my blog, so touch wood I can fill you in on all the lovely stuff happening. And ……………. erm!!! A bed that is calling my name … hardly surprising as its just going on seven GMT and I have been up and working since just before 12 am. Messes with your head pulling an all nighter when its actually daytime LOL
Still jet lag and sheer bone wearieness can’t detract that I actually made it to China – and I made it for FREE!!!
There are some days I really love my life!! and this is definitley one of the days!!!
Fill you in later my lovelies – but I have a Press Call in a few minutes and then meeting with the Mongolian Junior Team – apparently they have 8 kids under 16 who can memorise a pack of cards in under 30 seconds … so off to get a demo and arrange some pictures with their Memory Hero – nay, Memory Demi-God and Guru Mr Dominic O’Brien (AKA the Silver Fox …. but only to his friends LOL)
Keep it frugal my lovelies!!
