Fat Free Ranch Dressing but without the nasty stuff in the jars .. or the funny named preservatives in the packet.
Although it’s not terribly common here if you have ever been to the States you will have come across Ranch Dressing at some point. Its a punchy mixture of herbs and garlic that is mixed with full fat buttermilk and mayonnaise.
Full of flavour – sure .. but chocca full of fat as well. Usually you have it thick as a dip .. or thinned down as a salad dressing .. but it always struck me as kind of odd that you would go to the whole trouble of making a healthy salad and then cover it in fat.
But it tastes soooo good!!! So I have played and tweaked with my own version with stuff you can buy in the UK … and it’s pretty nifty. You still get a delicious creamy dressing … but as I mix mine with fat free natural yoghurt you get none of the fat ….. which means you can drizzle, dip and scoop to your hearts content.
Fat Free Ranch Dressing
- 3 tablespoons of dried parsley
- 3 teaspoons dried onion granules
- 2.5 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons dill
- 1 teaspoon basil
- 1 teaspoon ground salt
- 1 teaspoon ground pepper
I blitz mine in my little mini blender as the kids are a bit funny about “big bits” of green in their dressing. I know .. but it’s odd the things they put their feet down about.
Now the flavour of this is so punchy that I bet you won’t use it all at once .. so make sure you have a jar to cover the dressing before you pop it into the fridge.
All I am saying is that with garlic AND onion powder in there is that if you don’t keep it covered them everything in your fridge is going to be a bit pongy in the morning… and no-one likes garlic flavoured milk in the morning. So mixed with the yogurt it’s perfect as a creamy dressing over plain greens … very french way of eating salad and a perfect starter before dinner too.
With thicker Greek Style yoghurt or quark you have a fabulous thick dip just made to dip a whole platter of raw veggies into… brilliant for those evenings when you have the munchies and just have to chew on something.
I’m not a fan of bought bottled dressings I confess .. I kind of like eating only things that I can pronounce and many of them sound like science experiments rather than nutritious food … but sometimes you only need to tweak to get the best of both worlds.
So …. with an abundance of leaves in the garden I can say just one thing ….. bring on the salads!!!
