Well everyone else is doing the “drop a stone in 7 hours” and “get ripped by teatime posts” ……
Why not drop my own plans for getting frugally fit into the mix (stop sniggering there behind the bike-sheds)
Well being me … and being a Single Mum with two full timish jobs, a tiny budget and no motivation to “feel the burn” … here is my plan for 2017 ….
Aye – shanks pony!!! My ain twa feet!!
Sure I could hop on the bandwagon and commit to paying a fortune and joining a gym … but I know me … it wouldn’t last and I would have the guilt of not going, of running into a member in the supermarket, of avoiding the coaches at the bus-stop … it really is a very small town you know!
Nope – 2017 is the year of the “daunder”. Gentle on the knees and repaired back … gets me out in the daylight (essential after a day on a computer screen and telephone) and permits me to nosey (and mosey) around my hometown without any bother.
I have even roped my office-bud in on the game (well I confess we started this at the tail end of last year). At lunchtime we leave our desks, turn off the lights, lock the door and head out for a 30 minute brisk walk. We like to think that we are in training for Indy2 … but the reality is that we both struggled with all the leafleting during the last election and feel we need to get “match-fit” before another is sprung on us.
So I walk to work the long way around … drop the wee red-head at school then do a big loop around town and back to the centre to go to the office.
We walk at lunchtime .. a brisk 30 minutes up and down the wee bit hills that our town can offer (we actually have about 7 routes that we can tackle in a 30 minute break)
I have the afternoon school run – office, school, office …. used to hate the getting wrapped up to go get the wee one but now I am clocking up extra steps so its cool.
And if I manage a quick nip out to the Post Office, or supermarket, or walk in the park I easily tip between 13000 and 15000 steps per day which is not too shabby for someone who has a pretty much sedentary worklife now. I am hoping when it is actually light after work and you can’t see our breath that I might even be inspired to take an evening jaunt.
Even better – I can just open the door and go …… no gym kit, no need to shower, no special tools or kit .. just walk … enough to get a wee bit puffy and keep it up for a good 30 minutes or so.
And I get to watch my wee town wake up .. and the seasons change …. and the gentle morphing between winter and spring that has subtly begun with the one tree that has burst forth with pussy willow over the last couple of days.
So no pounding my joints … but being kind to myself. No damage just gentle stretching and easing into the spring.
……………….at no cost ………………. just my thing!!
Now I wouldn’t want you to think that I have gone soft or anything – there is still a bit of competition woven in. A year or so back I was gifted a fit-bit and we do challenge one another to hit our 10,000 daily target and then some.
So I wear my little rubber band and my office pal has an app on his phone that does the same …… and a bit of gentle encouragement to push one another out the door on a mizzly day is always very welcome.
But the important thing is that this is something we can commit to and stick to. Its so easy to so that its hard to come up with excuses not to.
Being kind to ourselves – that is what 2017 should be all about for us. Do you agree?
So what gentle habit will you adopt to carry through this next year?
