I love green tea – I’m lucky that I have had a few trips to China with work and have been able to come back with green tea that I make at home. In the morning I make a one litre teapot full with half a teaspoon of leaves -pour a mug to enjoy and the rest gets tipped into a tea flask that I can sip all morning. At lunch I fill up the teapot again (with the same leaves inside) and I enjoy slightly less strong tea in the afternoon .. so my green tea leaves last a long time. Its helped me kick the “too many cups of coffee” habit that I developed working in the old office.
The thing is – come mid afternoon I still feel that horrible middle of the afternoon slump and am terribly tempted by a mug of coffee or a can of diet coke to push me through till dinner time … not good, for my health or my wealth … so was casting around for a mid afternoon pick me up that was a bit better for me.
So a pal suggested that I use some of the matcha powder (powdered green tea) that I use in the occasional green smoothie that I have for breakfast alongside some citrus to make a more natural “energy drink” … I wasn’t convinced .. you see, matcha and water creates a bit of a “pond water” like colour .. but I will try anything once.
So for the last five days I have had a glass of this every afternoon … and can I say – despite the avocado green colour – it’s been totally amazing and the change in my afternoons has been pretty amazing! It doesn’t seem to give you a spike and crash like a big hit of caffeine in coffee in cola does .. but it definitely does give you a gentle little buzz that coasts you through the afternoon without sending me hoovering up chocolate or biscuits.
So .. seeing as even ALDI is selling this stuff now and not just the high end health shops – if you are into green teas why not give this a shot?
- 1.5 litres cold water
- Half a teaspoon matcha powder
- Juice of half a lime (or lemon)
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup
Matcha powder does this annoying “clumpy” thing when you try to stir it into water – you really need to tip it into a jar with water, pop the lid on and shake, shake, shake .. or if you have a blender add some water, the powder and juice and blitz together.
I make a big bottle of this up – does about three big glasses so lasts a good couple of days at time. The glass bottle gets tucked into the fridge and I can grab a glass whenever I feel the need.
Like I say – not the prettiest colour on the planet – but then my Dad drinks this energy drink that is a bright neon blue colour .. so I figure compared to what must be in that – this is at least natural in its colouring.
So how does it taste? Well – limey .. of course .. and a little bit green and grassy .. not unpleasant at all just a little unusual when you first take a gulp. Its nicest really cold .. and actually I love it iced up with plenty of ice-cubes.
But I do love the long slow buzz of “being awake” energy it gives me .. and in fact I have been able to drink more water since I started having this in the afternoon as I am less tempted to go looking for a sweet drink once I have had my green energy!
So .. colour aside .. I think this is a habit I shall continue …. green tea, plenty of water and a Green tea energy drink whenever I feel the need.
So what tricks can you share that could get me to enjoy drinking water more in these still chilly days? I am great in the summer but not so hot in other seasons.
