“You are going to be 50 anyway … ” – those were the words that jumped out at me as I listened to an online talk on Friday evening.
SIGH !! Yes I am ….. and I was having one of those “Woe is me!” sessions in the kitchen thinking “and exactly what have I done with my life” … no need to jump in and tell me LOADS!! In a semi rational moment would would each start rattling off the real and important things we have done in our lives .. but you know … Friday evenings .. dinner time ….. Yup!!! Armpit of the Universe session!
Two weeks into the new job .. and I am beginning to get a handle on all the stuff that needs doing – and its all doable. Its the where I was doing it that was getting on my goat.
Camped out on a foldie out table in my livingroom .. I mean I have the whole house and I am camped out like a student on a laptop pretending to be grown up.
ENOUGH!!! I fed the kid that was in the house – and left him to do the washing up …. then grabbed a roll of bin bags and went to tackle THIS:
By bedtime Friday night I had all the charity shop donations in bin bags in the hall ready to be run up the hill to the shop in the morning.
Everything bar the bed frame was dragged out of the room and I had even run the hoover around the carpet, the skirting boards and the “home for spiders” known as the coving.
You see this room has been unused for over a year since our last lodger … and I figured that better it was made into an office that was going to actually pay the mortgage than just sitting there being a dumping space for charity shop kibble.
The “Opportunity cost” of me having a pleasant, secure place to work far out outstrips the potential the room has a revenue generator in getting another lodger in.
10 am Saturday morning …… beginning to wish I hadn’t started ….
All I could see was the stuff than needed doing .. the walls needed painting … which means covering the carpet .. which needs replacing as its not a whole piece .. which means buying carpet .. and underlay .. and getting a carpet fitter .. and a new brass threshold for the door … and shaving the bottom of the door as it would no longer shut on the new carpet and underlay ………………
But you know what .. none of that really needed doing. What was important was getting me into the room and ready to work on Monday morning earning money – NOT SPENDING money!
Painted desk from the other lodgers room – swapped it with the one from in here.
Tall bookshelves that were living in the kids hangout room (the one with all the devices and big table for homework – that I erroneously thought I might be able to share with them when I began to work from home) Nope – conference call and Minecraft music are not a great blend!!!
Smaller bookcases were in a walk in closet holding up several pots of paint and some tools – they look much nicer here I can tell you!
Whiteboard from under the bed where it has been living for far too long.
All my books, my stationery .. all my “stuff” which was strewn throughout the house in the funny corners where I have ended up working over the months .. all collected and neatly stored away in a space that is now mine.
The flowers that were a gift when I left my old job are on display and are still gorgeous – my smelly candles can by burned to my hearts content .. and no-one .. I mean no-one puts a glass of juice down on an important piece of paperwork.
Finally – a grown up space that I can call mine.
And if you have a spare few minutes .. here is the talk that spurred me on to my 24 hours of activity … and a realisation that one day soon “You are going to be 50 anyway” .. and what do I want to achieve?
Well ..now I have the perfect space to achieve it all XX
